Margaret Greaves

Signed, titled and dated on the reverse

Margaret Greaves is a portrayal of Derrick Greaves's first wife. There seems to be an empathetic pathos to this image, a sense of resignation, as Margaret stares off to a distant focal point outside the parameters of the frame. Although it echoes with the same sensibility of the drawings of his wife in the role of mother to his children, the absence of the children in this frame is perhaps more lonely. This is emphasised by the void around the figure, which also acts as a frame, emphasising the sweeping contour of the figure from the top right of the canvas to the bottom left.
