North Norfolk Coast I

This representational work of the North Norfolk coast preceded Greaves's move to Norfolk in 1983 when he took up the post of Head of Printmaking at Norwich School of Art, a position he held until 1991. However, the choice of location suggests he had a previous familiarity with the county.

Although the form in the work is designed to portray a specific geological entity, with the apparent sandy colour and amorphous aquatic shape, the location is wholly ambiguous, other than through its ascribed title.
The lack of obvious correlation between the content of the painting and the title suggest this is a highly personalised representation of the North Norfolk coast. However, it can equally work as a universally personalised image through the conceptually accessible execution of the painting.
